I began to feel certain there was scope for something altogether more elegiac, more emotionally charged and more profound, about the nature of warfare in the spearhead of combat in the last year of the war in Europe.įuelled by this instinct, I posted a message on Twitter, saying I was thinking of such a project, featuring the Sherwood Rangers, a British tank unit. We were considering the impact of Stephen Ambrose’s book – on which the series was based – and it occurred to me that there a similar bestseller should be written around a tank regiment rather than Ambrose’s company of paratroopers. The idea for it came about following a conversation with John Orloff, one of the script writers of the globally successful TV series, Band of Brothers. My latest book is BROTHERS IN ARMS about the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry from D-Day until the end of the war, and is, without doubt, the most personal book I’ve ever written. War in the West – Germany Ascendant 1939 – 1941.THE WAR IN THE WEST – The Allies Fight Back, 1941-1943.Together We Stand: North Africa 1942-1943 – Turning the Tide in the West.Sicily ’43: The First Assault on Fortress Europe.Fortress Malta: An Island Under Siege, 1940-1943.Dam Busters: The Race to Smash the German Dams.Burma ’44 – The battle that turned Britain’s war in the East.Big Week – The biggest air battle of World War Two.Although I studied history at university, (and continue to do so), my first book was a novel. Not many people write both fiction and non-fiction, but I like doing both. As a historian, I try and carry out as much original research as possible and remind myself to look at the various aspects of the war I am studying with fresh eyes.Īs a writer, I want to produce books that are always entertaining, easy to read and follow, and which contain damn good stories.
